Clear coat over vinyl graphics. If you are to attempt the clear coating procedure always test test test. In all instances i had the company that does the vinyl graphics on our company vehicles supply and cut the vinyl. They can really stand out if only on the vinyl but it looks like it was meant to be that way if you cover the whole mug. Add one light coat of clear automotive urethane to the decal.
Then apply a second light coat. Today we use paint systems and they depend on the substrate layers for proper adhesion and binding of the layers to complete the system. Spray two to three coats of clearcoat paint over the area that has been scuffed including the vinyl graphics waiting five minutes between each coat. The clear coat that should have been installed over the base color will bind to the base color and create a uniformly hardened paint surface.
If you do decide to go with a clear coat we highly recommend testing the results on a separate piece of your vinyl wrap. Spray one coat onto your vinyl. Clear coat and acrylic type paints could and likely will disturb and smear most printed graphics. And likely it will only work well with die cut style vinyl decals not printed ones.
Graphics will be easier to remove from a clear coated surface. Wait about 10 minutes for the first coat to dry. To seal vinyl decals on mugs simply cover the entire mug with some dishwasher safe mod podge. Wait another 10 minutes.
I have attached a picture of a table i did several years ago for a 60. We recommend that you cover the entire mug and not just the decal because you will see some little brushstrokes. Hold the can six to eight inches from the surface and use thin coats so the paint doesn t run. Take the sample out in the sunlight and examine it from every possible angle.
